You probably have heard this a million times, ‘life without goals is like a ship without a destination’. No matter how super-spangled the ship might be, if it’s Captain doesn’t know where it’s going, that Ship is as good as lost. The same is true with your life, it is one giant amazing ship but if you (the Captain) don’t give it a clear destination then my friend you might as well leave it engine-turned-off at the harbor. Otherwise, sooner or later we’ll have to send out a search and rescue crew to find you.
I want you to start 2022 ready and thrilled to fill it with ‘wow’ moments all the way to its end. But you can only do that, if first you can lay out clear cut goals out of your desires, needs, dreams, hope and wishes. Allow me to clarify one thing about goals, they are not the actual destination. no. Rather, goals are like your landing strip at the destination. Your destination can be something as big as ‘happiness’. But how do you get at that island? See, you need a landing place, like a helipad, then from there you can roam around your destination as you see it fit.
I’m going to share with you top 10 personal goals you should set for yourself before starting 2022.
Goal #1 Write down your 2022 destinations. I said destinations because people always want and need more than on thing. You want to be happy, you want to be rich, you want to be independent, you want to have a great family, you want to have basic needs, you want to be secure, you want to be surrounded with friends, you want to be educated, you want to healthy, you want to be apart of an adventure, you want to be successful and much more.
Goal #2 Mark your 2022 destinations according to their Urgency and Importance. All your 2022 destinations should fall under 4 categories:
- Important. – I
- Urgent. – U
- Important and Urgent. – I&U
- Not Important, not Urgent.- N-I, N-U
First priority goes to things you definitely must have in 2022, mark them ‘I & U’. Second priority goes to things you need to have in 2022, mark them ‘U’. Third priority goes to things you want to have in 2022, mark them ‘I’. Fourth priority goes to things you wish to have, mark them ‘N-I, N-U’.
Goal #3 Write why. Why did you mark some of your 2022 destinations(desires) important, others Urgent, others Important& Urgent and others not Important, not Urgent? The reasons have to be so clear and concise to avoid confusion and frustration which leads to exhaustion and giving up before time.
Goal #4 Brainstorm tactics. There are so many paths that can lead to a destination. For example, take your 2022 desire to be becoming rich. Some of the tactics would be; starting a business, getting a commercial loan, making an investment in a lucrative project, buying an already existing profitable business, selling your expensive property to buy many more cheaper but profitable properties, buying a falling stock to sell it on rise, etc. Make sure you generate as many ideas as possible on how to get to each destination.
Goal #5 Mark all your tactics according to their effectiveness. Start with Important and Urgent destinations, look at all the ideas you generated on how to achieve them, then mark them in the following ways;
- Highly effective
- medium effective
- Less effective
- Not effective
N.B. Highly effective tactics are those that have a 90% chance of working and producing good results. Medium effective are those tactics that have a 75% chance of working and producing good results. Less effective are those tactics that have a 50% chance of working and producing good results and finally, not effective are those tactics that have below 50% chance of working and producing good results.
Goal #6 Write why. Why did you mark some of your tactics highly effective, medium effective, less effective and not effective? Here as well, the reasons must be so clear and rational to avoid error and regret.
Goal #7 Consider reality. In any form of planning however much being optimistic is good, over-ambition is sabotaging by default. Look at the reality on the ground; look at the economic situation, political situation, environmental situation, social situation and more importantly in this century look at disruptive technology because t changes everything. Make sure that your 2022 destinations and laid out paths or tactics to achieve them do not contradict the reality in your country; Togo, Somalia, Benin, Congo, Ethiopia, Botswana, Gabon, Namibia, Burundi, Kenya, Senegal, Madagascar, Guinea, South Sudan, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana, etc.
Goal #8 Write why. Clarify why you think your destinations, the tactics you laid out to achieve them align or contradict the reality on the ground. Still it is always important to clear out all confusion and misjudgment before hand.
Goal #9 Begin implementing your tactics immediately. Let me tell you a simple but powerful truth about life, it happens pretty fast. As soon as something is meant to be it happens immediately, no delays. That should be your attitude about performance, as soon as you got something to do, please get to it right there and then, no delays.
Goal#10 Enjoy the process. Remember you are not a soldier at war. It is simply desires you want to achieve in 2022 and the tactics you have laid out to a achieve them. It should be fun all the way. As a matter of fact, if it stops being fun, just know something somewhere is wrong.
