If you love solving hard problems that make people’s lives easier, come build with us.
We’re looking for a Senior Underwriter for our small group level-funded product. This role is critical to balancing profitable growth with competitive, compelling offers to prospects and renewal quotes for current customers. You’ll be collaborating closely with our Revenue, Actuarial, and Product/Engineering teams to evaluate risk, price appropriately, and generally move the needle forward in our small group underwriting.
What you will do:
Support underwriting operations for new and renewing business in the small group health segment
Evaluate an employer’s group health plan risk and determine appropriate pricing for level-funded plans while collaborating closely with Revenue to win new business through intelligent risk taking.
Manage/assist the renewal process via renewal quote development with accurate projections and proprietary pricing strategies. Use data from claims, risk assessments, and historical performance to drive pricing decisions to balance persistency and profitability.
Help design and refine underwriting guidelines, processes, and tools as we scale.
Provide underwriting guidance to Revenue and other internal teams as needed. Explain funding mechanics, underwriting levers, and market shifts that impact pricing.
Help ensure alignment on quote and renewal delivery timelines.
Partner cross-functionally with Product, Actuarial, and Revenue to continuously improve the end-to-end underwriting experience
Monitor underwriting outcomes and market dynamics to inform ongoing pricing and risk strategies
About you:
4+ years of underwriting experience, ideally with a focus on small groups and/or level-funded products
Strong data analysis skills (Excel, SQL, Mode, Tableau, etc.)
Excellent understanding of health insurance pricing, risk assessment, and underwriting best practices
Comfortable taking calculated risks to support business goals, especially in a fast-evolving startup environment
Experience working at a PEO, carrier, TPA, or insurtech start-up focused on the small group market is a plus.
Outstanding communication skills in person, over the phone, in writing, via email, chat, carrier pigeon, etc.
Unparalleled attention to detail. You love getting into the weeds to get things done.
Gritty. You’re willing to jump into any of the team’s work and support. We’re a small team and sometimes when a few of us are out, we all need to help fill in for each other.
You are mission-driven. You care about making our healthcare system work better for people and business owners
You ask questions from a place of genuine curiosity and humility
You assume positive intent and meet your teammates with compassionate candor to solve problems together
You remain flexible, resilient, and foster a culture of continuous learning even in the face of hardship.

You follow through on your commitments and foster trust with your colleagues.
Benefits:
