SITE: Nigeria (Remote)

SALARY: N550,000 (Nigerian Naira) /PCM

ANNUAL LEAVE: 20 days per annum (excl. Public Holidays) as per contract

REPORTING TO: Chief Executive Officer & Chief Operating Officer

Overview

The Chief Editor at AWiMNews is a leadership position responsible for ensuring the overall quality, accuracy, and integrity of the organisation’s news content. As the Chief Editor, you will oversee a team of editors and writers and work closely with the editorial board to shape the editorial direction of AWiMNews.

Responsibilities

Editorial Strategy: Develop and execute the editorial strategy, in line with AWiMNews’ mission and values, to ensure the delivery of high-quality and engaging content to readers.

Team Management: Lead and manage a team of editors and writers, providing guidance, feedback, and support to ensure their professional growth and development. Delegate tasks and set clear content creation, editing, and publication expectations.

Content Planning and Production: Collaborate with the editorial board and other relevant stakeholders to plan and execute an editorial calendar, ensuring that articles, features, and news stories are delivered on time and aligned with AWiMNews’ editorial standards.

Editing and Proofreading: Review and edit articles and other written materials for clarity, accuracy, grammar, spelling, and consistency. Ensure that all content adheres to the organisation’s style guide and editorial guidelines.

Fact-Checking and Verification: Conduct thorough fact-checking and verifying information in articles and news stories. Ensure that all sources are reliable and accurately cited.

Collaborative Partnerships: Build and maintain relationships with external contributors, journalists, and industry experts to expand the reach and influence of AWiMNews. Act as a spokesperson for the organisation when necessary.

Audience Engagement: Monitor audience feedback and analytics to identify areas for improvement and implement strategies to engage AWiMNews’ readership consistently. Encourage reader feedback and respond to comments and inquiries promptly.

Revenue Generation: Develop and implement a revenue generation strategy that secures the business model and financial sustainability of AWiMNews.

Stay Up to Date: Stay current with industry trends and best practices in journalism, always seeking professional growth and improvement opportunities. Utilise emerging storytelling tools and technologies to enhance the delivery of news content.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, Communications, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Extensive experience in journalism, preferably as an editor or managing editor.
  • Strong editorial and writing skills, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Excellent command of the English language, including grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Proficiency in content management systems, publishing tools, and social media platforms.
  • Familiarity with AP Stylebook and other editorial style guidelines.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Passion for and knowledge of women’s issues and global affairs preferred.
